My Dandelion Teacher

If you’ve spent a few moments on this site, you’ve probably noticed my love for dandelions.

I could wax lyrical about how this wispy plant is packed with more vitamin A than spinach, more vitamin C than tomatoes, and is wealthy with iron, calcium, and potassium. A superfood in a puff-ball.

I could gush romantically about how across cultures, they symbolise hope, healing, and emotional strength. Some say it is a symbol of pure love.

I could sentimentalise the childhood magic of dandelions carrying my wishes on the breeze.

But my fascination is something much more visceral.  When I gaze upon a dandelion, my mind slows down, my body softens, and something in my being marvels in awe.

This resilient creation, unconcerned by being labelled a ‘weed’, unapologetically pops up here, there and everywhere – not fussed whether it’s in the crack of the sidewalk, a manicured garden, or the open fields.

This feisty creation, not discouraged by poor soil, cement or a ‘bad environment’,  shows up, just as they are, bringing a little more air, nourishment and beauty to tough earth.

This allowing creation, so willing to let go of their feathery fruit and seed, to float freely to unknown places at the whim of the wind.

And in spite of all this, they remain true to their nature: supple, delicate, light.

So yes, I have a thing for dandelions. Because sometimes, the humblest things in life are the most miraculous – if we’re willing to pause and look closely.
